Conditions and limits for using the calculators and content on Crisis Calculator.

1. Nature of the content

The calculators and texts on crisis-calculator.com are editorial guidance for personal emergency preparedness. They provide estimates and model calculations based on publicly available sources, in particular the guidance of the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) and the EU PVGIS database of the Joint Research Centre.

The content does not replace individual professional advice. In particular it is not:

  • medical advice or a treatment recommendation,
  • electrical engineering design or an installation specification,
  • structural, building physics or energy planning,
  • legal, tax or investment advice,
  • an official emergency or civil protection instruction.

For safety-critical or life-critical applications (for example backup power for medical devices, commercial or building installations, continuous medication) qualified professionals must be consulted: physician, pharmacy, licensed electrician, medical supplier, manufacturer.

2. Accuracy and variance

The calculators work with averaged input data and simplified models. Actual values can deviate from the calculations by ±20% or more. The following quantities deviate regularly:

  • Appliance power draw depends on model, energy efficiency and actual use. Start-up surges (inrush of compressors and motors) can reach five times the running wattage. The watt calculator applies typical factors; individual appliances can exceed them.
  • Solar yield depends on weather, shading, snow, dirt, actual panel orientation, battery temperature and charge controller quality. Regional averages are a rough approximation.
  • Blackout scenarios: real outages depend on countless factors (cause, weather, grid topology, backup switching). Any timeline or score is a didactic model, not a forecast.
  • Supply lists are derived from civil protection guidance and linear scaling over people and days. Individual needs (allergies, calorie requirements, illness, preferences) must be added by you.
  • Prices, where mentioned, are estimates at the time of publication and are not updated in real time. Only the prices at the respective retailer's checkout are binding.

3. Product mentions

Where products are mentioned, this is based on publicly available manufacturer data and editorial judgement. I run no laboratory tests of my own and give no warranty that a mentioned product is suitable for your individual use case. The English edition of this site contains no affiliate links.

4. Liability

I accept no liability for the timeliness, correctness, completeness or quality of the information provided. In particular, no liability is accepted for:

  • indirect damage, consequential damage, lost profit, data loss or damage from business interruption,
  • damage arising from the use or non-use of the content presented here,
  • damage from wrong decisions based on the calculations or product mentions,
  • damage arising from the use of linked third-party content.

Liability for damage resulting from injury to life, body or health and for damage caused by intent or gross negligence remains unaffected; in these cases statutory liability applies. Liability for the breach of essential contractual obligations is limited to the foreseeable damage typical for this kind of service.

5. External sources

References to the BBK, the EU PVGIS database, manufacturers or standards serve traceability. The respective original documents are authoritative; where the content here and the original source differ, the original source applies.

The appliance power values and irradiation data used in the calculators are averages from publicly accessible sources and manufacturer specifications. Current, device-specific values are found on the nameplate or data sheet of your device.

6. Your own responsibility

You use the calculators and recommendations at your own responsibility. Before a purchase decision or a preparedness measure, check the results for plausibility, for example by reading the manufacturer documentation, consulting a professional or using independent sources.

7. Applicable law and jurisdiction

The law of the Federal Republic of Germany applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. The exclusive place of jurisdiction for all disputes arising from the use of this site with merchants, legal entities under public law or special funds under public law is Frankfurt am Main. For consumers the statutory jurisdiction applies.

8. Changes

I reserve the right to amend this disclaimer to reflect new legal requirements or changes to the site. The version current at the time of access applies.
